Middle the 20th century, there were just few
"Euskal Txerri" pigs in the basque country.
The autochthonous animals that were living with us
in the farms and mountains suffered
a significant unstoppable diminution.
At the time (and even today), the industrial schemes had priority
concerning the agricultural production; so the quality was sacrified
to get more quantity at any rate and any cost,
also the environemntal cost.
However, thanks to farmer's courage and determination,
it has been possible to save those animals from the extinction.
Today, the pigs are perfectly adapted to their environment;
they conquer again the basque territory.
In the north of the country, there were only 25 in 1989;
in 2000, there were 1.500.
It's time for them to inhabit little by little the mountains
in the south of the country; we are doing our best for it.
Last autumn, we brought the first 30 pigs
given by a farmer from Behe-Nafarroa (french Basque Country).

    Our friends are enjoying
    the spacious and sunny stable.

    They are breeded in the open air, in the mountain.

    However, they come back home quickly,
    to see if we give them some sweet!
